dissecting ess.r.images:LBB

I’ve kinda been toying with this idea for a while now.  Since the images section seems to get more traffic in general I finally decided to follow through.  Granted, I think most of you enjoy laughing at my “Mullettastic (tm)” family photos.  But I think the captions will suffice for them (that is, when I get around to actually adding captions).

Today we begin with “Lil’ Boy Blue.”

Lil Boy Blue

Lil’ Boy Blue is a comic character that has mostly existed only in my mind.  One of these days he’ll either appear in a comic or some other literary form.

He’s a young devil, literally, except, he doesn’t know that his dad is Satan.  He actually thinks his Dad is kind of a good guy.  When he finds out he’s the offspring of the mythical root of all evil, well, (b/c I gotta say it) all “hell” breaks loose.  It’s also a little more complicated since he is doing his best to blend in with his classmates, you know, the kids who only *act* like devils.  He has small horns, blue skin, a tail and “perma-RAWKFIST.”  So, you know, that can be tricky.  I haven’t done any of the other cast yet, so I haven’t figured out what aspects I’ll explain away, or how, in the mythical town in which it all takes place.

The problem with the story is it can go a very comic -think Calvin and Hobbes- route or go a very dark and melancholy route. I honestly don’t know which.  I’ve got stories for both so I could try to work both angles at different times.

The name comes from the Harry Chapin song “Cat’s in the Cradle.” Particularly these lines:

Said, “I’m gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I’m gonna be like him.”

In various ways the song always struck me being particularly poignant.  It seemed to fit the story of a misfit kid desperately trying to find a way to fit in while dealing with more severe levels of duplicity at home.  So, “Lil’ Boy Blue” just fit.  Originally, he was going to be named “Lil’ Bastard.” This was nickname of James Dean’s Porsche (the one he was driving when he died).  “Lil’ Boy Blue” seemed to fit better and is obviously much more marketable.  So it stuck.

As to if/when I’ll get around to those stories?  One step at a time…I gotta finish up some other projects first.
